Finnish Appeals Court Cuts Simon Ekpa’s Prison Term to Four Years, Upholds Terrorism Convictions
A Finnish appeals court has reduced the prison sentence of pro-Biafra agitator Simon Njoku Ekpa from six years to four years while upholding his terrorism-related convictions. The Eastern Finland Court of Appeal maintained findings that Ekpa publicly incited terrorist crimes and participated in the activities of a terrorist group. His convictions for aggravated tax fraud and violating legal-practice regulations were also upheld. The court found that Ekpa directed armed groups operating in South-East Nigeria between 2021 and 2024, using social media to encourage violence and assist with weapons, explosives and ammunition. It said the groups attacked police stations, government buildings and military checkpoints in pursuit of an independent Biafra. The sentence was reduced because the court considered the offences to have occurred in exceptional circumstances resembling a civil conflict or state of necessity. However, it ruled that the fighting did not meet the threshold of a full-scale civil war. Ekpa has denied the charges.
