CRPP Demands Apology and Compensation After Children’s Day Stampede in Edo
A Children’s Day event at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on May 27 ended in chaos when over 50 students, mostly girls, were injured in a stampede. Witnesses say some male students forced entry, prompting private security to use pepper spray and triggering panic. Unconfirmed reports suggest two students may have died. The Coalition of Registered Political Parties accused Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration of lacking proper crowd control and questioned the hiring of untrained bouncers for such a large event. CRPP said the breach also undermined claims that cultism had been eradicated in Edo State. CRPP called for an unreserved apology to affected children and their parents. It demanded that the state government cover all hospital bills and provide fair compensation for the victims’ losses. The State Government dismissed the criticism as sensationalist. It said tear gas was used only to disperse unruly behaviour at one gate. Officials added that the deputy governor personally assisted with first aid and that injured students received prompt medical care before returning home safely.
