Google to Disable Search and AI Tools by Default for School Accounts

Google says Search and its AI tools will be turned off by default for students using school-managed K–12 accounts. School administrators can choose to enable Search, Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Gemini in Classroom individually or together. The change follows growing debate over AI use, screen time and student learning in schools. The policy drew criticism from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who accused Google of using its market power to push AI into public schools. Google says the settings are intended to give school administrators control over how the tools are used.
