INEC: Parties That Breach Membership Register Rules May Lose 2027 Candidates
INEC says political parties that nominate candidates whose names were absent from membership registers submitted to the commission may be barred from fielding those candidates in the 2027 elections. The commission cited the Supreme Court’s September 24 ruling, which upheld relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and INEC’s revised 2027 election timetable. It said parties would not be allowed to replace disqualified candidates in order to benefit from breaches of the rules. INEC said it is reviewing the Certified True Copy of the judgment with its legal advisers and expects to clarify its position soon. The commission also raised concerns about threats during campaigns and said it is working to secure funding for the elections.
