Aregbesola Appeals Ruling Against Mark-Led ADC Leadership, Seeks Stay of Execution
Rauf Aregbesola has appealed the Federal High Court judgment that invalidated his emergence as national secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under the leadership of David Mark. He is also asking the court to suspend enforcement of the ruling while his appeal is considered. The appeal challenges the trial court’s jurisdiction and its interpretation of the ADC constitution and relevant provisions of the Electoral Act. Aregbesola argues that the party’s 99th National Executive Committee meeting could appoint an interim replacement, pending an election at a later convention or congress. The judgment followed a suit by Nafiu Gombe, who argued that he was entitled to lead the party after former national chairman Raph Nwosu resigned. The Mark-led group disputed Gombe’s claim, saying he was no longer a deputy national chairman when Nwosu resigned.
