Senate Passes Bill Seeking Tougher Penalties for Oil Spill Polluters
The Senate has passed a bill to strengthen the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency’s powers to penalise oil companies and other offenders responsible for spills. The proposed amendment would give the agency a firmer legal basis to impose heavier fines and pursue criminal sanctions for pollution in the petroleum sector. Lawmakers said current penalties have not been strong enough to prevent repeated violations. The bill is aimed at addressing persistent oil pollution in Niger Delta communities, where spills have damaged waterways, farmland, fishing and other livelihoods. It has passed the Senate but must complete further legislative steps before it can become law.
