China Approves Brain-Computer Devices as It Competes With Neuralink
China is speeding up the development of brain-computer interface technology, with several local companies reportedly receiving regulatory approval for medical devices. The country has also listed the sector as a strategic industry in its latest five-year plan. Brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs, connect brain activity to external devices. They may help patients control computers, assistive robotic arms and other tools using brain signals. One newly approved Chinese product is an electrode-equipped cap designed to help doctors assess cognitive function. The push puts Chinese firms in closer competition with Neuralink, Elon Musk's brain-chip company. Neuralink has tested implants with people living with paralysis, allowing some participants to control computers and physical devices. However, one Chinese developer has said its most advanced technology remains behind Neuralink's capabilities.
