Wike’s Abuja Demolitions Expose Years of Planning and Enforcement Failures
The demolition of about 30 buildings along the Ring Road 3 corridor linking Karsana, Gwarinpa and Kubwa has renewed questions about how allegedly illegal developments were allowed to stand for years. The FCT Administration says the structures encroached on a road corridor, waterways and other areas protected under Abuja’s master plan. The exercise followed heavy rainfall and flooding across parts of Abuja. Minister Nyesom Wike said buildings obstructing drainage channels would be removed, regardless of who owns them. However, affected property owners, tenants and business operators have raised concerns over the notices given and the speed of the demolitions. The central issue is not only whether the buildings violated planning rules, but also who approved, ignored or failed to stop them during construction. Demolitions may reopen drainage channels and clear road routes, but Abuja also needs reliable drainage, waste management, transparent land approvals and early enforcement to prevent future losses.
