63-Year-Old Arrested After Setting Himself Ablaze in New York Building Housing Google
A 63-year-old Brooklyn man has been arrested after allegedly setting himself on fire inside the lobby of a Lower Manhattan office building that houses Google. Police said he returned to the building on Friday afternoon with a backpack containing an accelerant and ignited the fluid at about 2:58pm. Security guards used fire extinguishers to put out the flames before emergency responders arrived. The man survived and was taken to a hospital burn unit in stable condition. He faces charges including arson, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. No staff member or bystander was injured. Investigators also recovered a collapsible tactical baton from his burnt bag. The motive remains unclear, and authorities have not confirmed whether Google was the intended target.
