Disability Association Urges Inclusion Across Nigeria’s Economy and Politics
The Special Persons Association of Nigeria (SPAN) has urged government and private-sector leaders to include persons with disabilities in every part of national life, particularly the economy and politics. At its 34th annual awards and anniversary event in Lagos, the association said meaningful inclusion should cover education, banking, sports, agriculture, technology, medicine, construction and public office. It said this would help reduce discrimination and create a stronger economy. SPAN said it has empowered more than 6,000 persons with disabilities through scholarships, vocational and computer training, job placement, advocacy, counselling, sports and medical support. The association also appealed for support to address shortages of mobility aids, vehicles, infrastructure, office equipment and a vocational centre. The event honoured 10 individuals and organisations, including para-athletes, disability-focused schools and foundations, and supporters of persons with disabilities.
