TikTok Access Disruptions in Northern Nigeria Raise Censorship Questions

TikTok users in parts of Kaduna, Kano and Sokoto report that the app is slow, fails to load videos or prevents them from logging in on regular mobile data. Some say access returns almost immediately when they use a VPN. As of September 23, 2026, no telecom operator, regulator or state or federal authority had publicly explained the disruption. It is therefore unclear whether the problem is a technical fault, network-routing issue, traffic-management measure or a deliberate restriction. The lack of clarity has fuelled concern among users, creators and small businesses that depend on TikTok for news, entertainment and income. With the 2027 elections approaching, many are also questioning whether the disruption could be linked to censorship.
