Abuja Residents Raise Alarm Over Rising Street Crime as Police Arrest 40 Suspects

The FCT Police Command says it arrested 70 suspects during coordinated raids on identified crime hotspots after reports of robbery around Unity Fountain and other parts of Abuja. Thirty people were released after screening, while 40 remain in custody for further investigation. Residents have reported cases of phone snatching, burglary, car break-ins, carjacking and “one-chance” robberies in areas including Wuse II, Millennium Park, Banex Junction, Nyanya and satellite towns. Some victims say attackers have operated near busy roads and public places, increasing fears about safety after dark. The police say recent operations have also led to arrests linked to drug offences, illegal arms and street syndicates. Residents are calling for more visible policing, faster emergency response, improved lighting and surveillance cameras, as well as stronger community policing partnerships across the FCT.
