Peter Obi Questions Tinubu’s Economic Reforms as Debt Costs Outstrip Revenue
NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, arguing that stronger revenue, reserves and GDP figures have not improved living conditions for many Nigerians. Reacting to a World Bank report, Obi said economic stability should be measured by whether people can afford food, healthcare and education, not only by headline economic indicators. He said millions of Nigerians still face poverty, unemployment and rising living costs. Obi cited figures showing that the Federal Government spent ₦7.7 trillion on debt interest payments between January and June 2026, against ₦6.2 trillion in revenue. He also said capital expenditure fell by about ₦700 billion over the period. He called for reforms that prioritise jobs, lower poverty and ensure that economic growth improves the welfare of low-income households.
