UN: Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Programme Reaches 5 Million People, Creates 5,000 Jobs
The United Nations has highlighted Nigeria’s rural electrification programme as a model for expanding affordable power through targeted subsidies and private investment. In its World Social Report 2026, the UN said the Nigeria Electrification Project helped establish 125 mini-grids and supported the sale of more than one million solar home systems. The interventions reportedly brought electricity to over five million people and created more than 5,000 green jobs. The report said subsidies can reduce electricity costs for low-income households while attracting investors to underserved communities. It also noted Nigeria’s efforts to combine solar power with agriculture, allowing farmers to produce energy while continuing food production. Nigeria recorded a transformation score of 44.30 and an inclusiveness score of 56.36 in the UN’s assessment of 168 countries. The report stressed that economic growth and new technology must reach vulnerable groups to deliver meaningful development.
