HP, UpSkill Universe Target AI Adoption Gap Among Nigerian SMEs
Many Nigerian small businesses have experimented with AI tools for captions, customer replies and research. However, using AI occasionally is different from building it into daily operations, planning and decision-making. HP and UpSkill Universe have launched an AI Skills for Business Programme to train 55,000 SMEs across Nigeria and South Africa. Participants will take practical AI courses, while 5,000 businesses will join live sessions on applying AI to real business challenges. The programme cites a study indicating that nearly 70% of SMEs are still at an early stage of AI adoption, while only 9% have integrated AI into everyday operations. The figures should be viewed as findings cited by the organisers, not as a complete measure of every Nigerian SME. Fifty top-performing businesses will proceed to an intensive bootcamp with business audits, mentorship and 90-day implementation plans. The focus is on helping SMEs use AI for tasks such as customer support, sales reporting, inventory analysis and business research.
