Retired DIG Demands Transparent Probe Into Deaths of 37 Suspected Miners in NSCDC Custody

A retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police has called for a prompt, independent and transparent investigation into the reported deaths of 37 people arrested over alleged illegal mining in Niger State and held by the NSCDC. He said investigators must establish how the arrests were made, the detention conditions, the medical history of each detainee and the confirmed cause of every death. He added that officers and commanders found responsible for negligence, evidence tampering or criminal conduct should face disciplinary action and prosecution. He stressed that suspected illegal miners retain their constitutional rights while in custody. He also called for proper custody registers, medical screening, ventilation, access to water, independent inspections and early legal support for detainees to prevent further deaths in detention.
