UNICEF: One in Five Children Face Online Sexual Exploitation and Abuse

UNICEF says about 20 million children aged 12 to 17 across 21 countries have experienced technology-facilitated sexual exploitation or abuse. The figure represents roughly one in five children surveyed. Social media platforms accounted for nearly 60 per cent of reported cases, while online gaming platforms accounted for 14 per cent. UNICEF said perpetrators often use digital platforms to build trust, hide their identities and target children. More than 15 million children were exposed to unwanted sexual content, while about nine million were pressured into sexual conversations or sharing sexual images. UNICEF added that over 40 per cent of cases were never disclosed, and fewer than one per cent were reported to authorities. The agency urged governments and technology companies to strengthen protections for children online, noting that victims face increased risks of anxiety, self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
