Court Dismisses El-Rufai’s Suit Seeking to Block Asset Freezing
A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a fundamental-rights suit filed by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai against the ICPC, DSS, EFCC and the Attorney-General of the Federation. El-Rufai had asked the court to stop the agencies from freezing his bank accounts or seizing his assets. He also sought declarations that assets bought with his severance pay were lawfully acquired, alongside ₦1 billion in damages and ₦100 million in legal costs. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik held that the case was an abuse of court process because similar actions had already been filed at the FCT High Court and the Federal High Court. The judge also ruled that courts cannot be used to prevent law-enforcement agencies from performing their statutory duties. The court struck out the EFCC, DSS and AGF as respondents, finding that the suit disclosed no reasonable cause of action against them.
