Can Nigerians Trust Their Votes to Count in 2027?

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general election, a central question remains: will voters truly decide the outcome, or will flaws in the system undermine their choices? INEC says it is strengthening technology, improving voter inclusion and planning a nationwide mock accreditation exercise to test BVAS and other equipment. Its experience in the Osun governorship election is being presented as a guide for the larger national vote. However, technology alone cannot stop vote buying, intimidation, violence, poor logistics or disputes during result collation. With more than 176,000 polling units and an estimated 1.4 million ad hoc personnel required, the scale of the election will be a major test. A credible election will require more than INEC’s assurances. Political parties, security agencies, election officials, observers, courts and voters must all play their part to ensure that every valid vote is counted and respected.
