Allegedly Drunk Pilot Crashes Stolen Plane Near Hungarian Nuclear Plant
A 24-year-old pilot allegedly stole a Cessna 172 while intoxicated and flew it into restricted airspace near Hungary’s largest nuclear power plant. Military radar detected the aircraft and fighter jets were deployed to intercept it. Minutes later, the plane crash-landed in a sunflower field about four miles from the facility, leaving the aircraft badly damaged. The pilot was not injured but allegedly tried to flee and attempted to seize a passing driver’s vehicle. Police arrested him and are investigating the alleged theft, possible intoxication and the security lapse that allowed the aircraft to enter the restricted zone. The nuclear plant was not damaged.
