Should UN Security Council Reform Go Beyond an African Seat?

I do not think an African seat on the UN Security Council is the logical next step. The bigger goal should be a better-funded and more democratic United Nations. Africa’s population is broadly comparable with India’s, yet India also has a strong claim to permanent representation. It would be difficult to argue that Africa deserves a seat while India and other major nations are left out. A fairer system could allocate a fixed number of seats to countries using economic strength as a key measure. Member states could also fund the UN in proportion to their GDP, creating a more equitable global institution.
