Ghana Calls on UK to Apologise for Slave Trade and Return African Artefacts
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has urged the United Kingdom to formally apologise for its role in the transatlantic slave trade and return African cultural artefacts taken during slavery and colonial rule. Mahama said an apology should be followed by action, including efforts to confront racism, investment in education and healthcare, youth development, fairer development partnerships and talks on global debt. He also called for the return of stolen heritage held in foreign museums and private collections. The Ghanaian leader welcomed Britain’s willingness to discuss an apology but said it would not, on its own, address the lasting effects of slavery and colonialism. The UK has ruled out financial reparations, while Ghana says it will continue working with African nations, CARICOM and the diaspora on reparatory justice.
