G.K.J. Amachree: The Nigerian Said to Have First Owned a Private Jet

Private jets are now closely linked to Nigeria’s wealthy business leaders, politicians and celebrities. Historical accounts, however, say Chief Godfrey Kio Jaja Amachree entered that world decades earlier. Amachree, widely known as G.K.J. Amachree, is identified in several Nigerian historical records as the first Nigerian to own a private jet. One account states that he bought his aircraft in New York in 1966. Born in Buguma, present-day Rivers State, in 1918, Amachree became a prominent lawyer and public servant. His reported aircraft purchase remains a notable part of Nigeria’s aviation and elite history.
