“He Was Shot in His Room” – Family Accuses Guards Brigade of Killing NYSC Member in Abuja
The family of Abdulsamad Jamiu rejects the military’s claim that he died in crossfire during a Guards Brigade operation in Dei-Dei, Abuja. They say he was alone in his room at about 2am when soldiers fired through the closed door, killing him instantly. Physical evidence, they argue, shows the bullet passed from the door to the wall. No weapon was found and no armed robbers were reported that night. The gate remained intact and broken barbed wire marks the fence where soldiers entered. Neighbours and a community vigilante group rushed to the scene. The family alleges soldiers then told them to “mop up the blood and flush it,” raising concerns of evidence tampering. Jamiu’s remains were released only after hours of administrative procedures. They demand an independent investigation outside military command, suspension and prosecution of the personnel involved, a retraction of the army’s initial statement, and a formal apology.
