Police Arrest Woman Over Fake Notice Claiming OPay Was Shutting Down
The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has arrested 27-year-old Hafsat Abubakar over a forged notice that falsely claimed OPay Nigeria would suspend its operations. Police said OPay petitioned the force on August 31, 2026, after the document circulated online. Digital forensic investigations allegedly traced the post to an X account said to be operated by Abubakar, who was arrested on September 4. The fake notice claimed OPay would stop processing transactions and account services indefinitely. OPay denied the claim, saying it remains fully operational, and urged customers to verify sensitive information through its official channels. The police said the investigation is ongoing and warned that spreading fabricated financial information can cause panic, disrupt transactions and damage reputations.
