Awka Court Remands Driver for Alleged Defilement of 14-Year-Old Girl
A 52-year-old driver appeared before the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka, Anambra State. He faces one count of defilement involving a 14-year-old girl. Prosecutors say the incident occurred on April 10 in Umuawulu community, Awka South. They allege the driver lured the girl into his home and abused her. Her mother and neighbours discovered the teenager in a compromising situation and alerted the police. A medical report from the Ntasi Sexual Assault Referral Centre confirmed the girl had been defiled, violating Section 3(2) of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition and Protection Law, 2017. The defendant denies intent, claiming he was drunk after a traditional wedding and cannot explain how the girl entered his room. Chief Magistrate U.E. Onochie ordered him remanded at Awka Correctional Centre and adjourned the case to June 10 for further hearing.
