Edo Woman Arrested for Staging Kidnap to Extort ₦50 Million
The Edo State Police Command has busted a plot by Mrs. Oluchi Ugbowan and her accomplices to fake her own abduction and demand a ₦50 million ransom from her family. The hoax was reported by her husband, leading investigators to deploy intelligence and technical resources to verify the claim. Police operatives arrested 28-year-old Israel Ability at Ramat Park, Benin City, and later tracked Mrs. Ugbowan to a hotel in Delta State. Interrogations revealed she recruited Ability to pose as a negotiator and another suspect’s son to produce ransom videos pointing a firearm at her head. Searches of the suspects’ hideouts recovered an automatic pump-action gun believed used to film the fake captivity scenes. The police commissioner commended the Anti-Kidnapping Unit’s professionalism and warned that false abduction claims undermine real rescue efforts and carry serious penalties. Investigations continue and charges will follow.
