Tree-Covered Floating Island Vanishes From Canadian Reservoir

Tree-Covered Floating Island Vanishes From Canadian Reservoir

Boaters on British Columbia's Williston Reservoir spotted a huge floating mass of land covered with trees. The island was said to be about the size of two NFL football fields. Satellite images confirmed it was drifting about 60 miles west of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam on July 21. By August 5, it was no longer visible in satellite imagery. Reservoir managers believe high water may have detached the vegetated mass from the shoreline, while strong winds pushed it across the water. Officials say it may have drifted into a sheltered area rather than sunk, but its location has not been confirmed.
