INEC Must Explain How Its AI Tools Will Protect Election Results
INEC says its Artificial Intelligence Division will support election logistics, voter services, risk detection and result verification under human oversight. The commission says the tools can detect anomalies, monitor database traffic and help protect its digital platforms. These assurances are not enough on their own. Public trust in election technology remains weak after the 2023 disputes over result uploads and the role of the IReV portal. Nigerians deserve clear answers before AI becomes part of a sensitive electoral process. INEC should publish its AI governance framework and explain exactly what the tools can and cannot do. AI must never alter, generate or replace polling-unit results. Any discrepancy it flags should be reviewed by humans, recorded in auditable logs and open to scrutiny by party agents, observers and the courts. Independent Nigerian technical experts, civil society groups, political parties and the National Assembly should be able to examine the system. The real test is simple: every voter must be confident that the result recorded at their polling unit is the result that counts.
