NSCDC Suspends 23 Officers After Deaths of 37 Niger Mining Suspects
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has suspended 23 officers following the deaths of 37 people arrested over alleged illegal mining in Niger State. Three additional personnel were suspended and paraded with 20 officers who had earlier been arrested over the incident. The corps has ordered flags to fly at half-mast for three days and says all arrested personnel will be made available to the presidential investigation committee and other panels. The Federal Government has also set up a 10-member independent committee to investigate the deaths. Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has called for an executive order to halt mining in locations considered problematic. He said the state government lacks direct control over mining and needs stronger federal action to address illegal operations and protect minors involved in the trade.
