VDM, Security Agencies and Why Serious Allegations Need Evidence
Nigeria’s security crisis has placed enormous pressure on the military, police and intelligence agencies. While their personnel deserve recognition for working in dangerous conditions, allegations of corruption, abuse or collusion with criminals must also be investigated transparently. At the Nigerian Bar Association’s 2026 conference in Rivers State, social media activist VeryDarkMan reportedly alleged that some government institutions and security personnel benefit from insecurity. He also claimed that some officers provide kidnappers with information about travellers. The police have asked him to present evidence to support the claims. Citizens have a right to criticise public institutions and demand accountability. However, accusations of criminal collaboration against named agencies or officials should be backed by verifiable facts and tested through proper investigations. Where evidence proves wrongdoing, those responsible must face prosecution. Nigeria needs security agencies that respect citizens’ rights and citizens who can raise concerns without fear. It also needs a public conversation built on evidence, transparent investigations and accountability, rather than viral claims or blanket denials.
