Nigeria and UK Sign Deal for Swift Repatriation of Deportees
During President Tinubu’s state visit to the UK, Nigeria and Britain agreed to speed up the return of failed asylum seekers, visa overstayers and convicted criminals. Under the pact, Nigeria will accept UK-issued identification letters in place of passports to avoid delays in issuing emergency travel documents. The agreement was signed by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. It introduces flexible deportation procedures and commits both countries to stronger border security and information sharing. Officials from both sides stressed fairness in migration control. Nigeria affirmed its dedication to safe, well-managed migration and hopes the partnership will set a benchmark for future bilateral agreements.
