Obasanjo to Tinubu: Debt Is Worse Than Leprosy, It Destroys Generations
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s position on government borrowing, arguing that debt can damage generations of Nigerians. Speaking on Friday at the Ajibosin Platform in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo rejected Tinubu’s earlier remark that borrowing is not leprosy. He said Nigeria’s rising debt burden and the share of revenue spent on debt servicing should worry citizens. Obasanjo also questioned the naira’s decline against the dollar and criticised Nigeria’s reliance on economic prescriptions from the World Bank and IMF. He urged leaders to pursue solutions that reflect Nigeria’s own realities. At the same forum, speakers said artificial intelligence can support development in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, education and business, but warned that Nigeria must build stronger institutions, local data capacity and technological infrastructure to benefit fully.
