How a Lagos Student Became One-Day Governor in 2001

On June 6, 2001, 16-year-old Chukwuebuka Anisiobi became Lagos State’s one-day governor after winning a spelling bee organised by the New Era Foundation. A student of Maryland Comprehensive High School, Anisiobi arrived at the Lagos Governor’s Office dressed like Governor Bola Tinubu and used the official car for the day. The competition’s runner-up, Oliseh Kelikume, served as acting deputy governor. The teenagers visited children at Lagos General Hospital and Modupe Cole Memorial School. At a ceremonial executive council meeting, Anisiobi urged government officials to remember poor people, young people and those in need. He also won a ₦100,000 prize and hoped to study computer engineering.
