Xenophobic Violence in South Africa Claims Two More Nigerian Lives
Fresh fears over the safety of Nigerians in South Africa have escalated after two citizens were killed in separate incidents on June 28. The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg described the deaths as deeply troubling and urged South African authorities to carry out a thorough investigation. Musa Joe was allegedly attacked and killed by suspected criminals in Witbank, Mpumalanga. In Pretoria’s Sunnyside area, Emeka Iroegbu reportedly died following torture by Tshwane Metro Police officers. These incidents come weeks after two other Nigerians lost their lives under controversial circumstances, prompting the Nigerian government to summon the South African High Commissioner and demand justice. No arrests have yet been made and investigations remain inconclusive. Anti-foreigner sentiment has also displaced many Mozambican and Ethiopian nationals, with shops looted and properties destroyed. The consulate warns that the continued targeting of Nigerian residents raises serious safety concerns and calls for the prosecution of those responsible.
