How I Became the Bomb: A Short Story of Betrayal and Vengeance
I’m Amira, 15, and I survived a massacre in Borno that claimed my parents. My uncle Bashiru and his wife brought my brother and me to Lagos to start over. Years later, Kabiru arrived and gradually forced us back into strict religious rules. He convinced me to become a suicide bomber at a Christian crusade and promised me honor in heaven. My uncle and his own children raped and brutalized me as they fastened the bomb vest. They sat around, smugly certain of my obedience. In my final moments, I saw only monsters. Ten minutes after my brother left for one last supper with me, I smiled, shouted “Allahu Akbar” and detonated the vest. That was the last thing any of us ever saw.
