Police Arrest Two Women Over False Access Bank Closure Claim
Police have arrested two women in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, over a social media message falsely claiming that Access Bank would shut down on September 23. The message urged customers to close their accounts and withdraw their money. The Force Criminal Investigation Department said the arrests followed a petition from the bank. Investigators alleged that one suspect shared the message in a WhatsApp group, while the other posted it on Facebook, where it reached a wider audience. Police said the suspects admitted their involvement during investigation. The FCID warned Nigerians to verify claims about banks and other critical services before sharing them online, as such rumours can trigger public panic and economic disruption.
