American Bar Association Warns Against Personal Attacks on US Judges

The American Bar Association has condemned what it calls growing personal attacks and intimidation directed at judges in the United States. It warned that such rhetoric threatens judicial independence and weakens public confidence in the rule of law. The association criticised government officials who attack judges over rulings, amid tensions between the courts and President Donald Trump’s administration on major policy decisions. It urged public officials, lawyers and citizens to reject language aimed at delegitimising the judiciary. The ABA said criticism of court decisions must not become personal hostility toward individual judges. It stressed that public officials have a duty to use civil language and respect the integrity and independence of the courts. The statement follows an earlier warning by US Chief Justice John Roberts, who said personally directed hostility toward judges had become dangerous and gone too far.
