FG Plans New Fire and Rescue Service to Replace 1963 Fire Service Act
The Federal Government plans to repeal the 1963 Fire Service Act and establish a Federal Fire and Rescue Service with wider emergency-response powers. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said the proposed law has been defended at the Federal Executive Council level and is expected to be presented this week. The new agency would handle firefighting, emergency medical care, search and rescue, hazardous-material incidents, disaster response and accident investigations. He said the reform would also strengthen fire-safety inspections, enforcement and public education, while improving coordination with state and local authorities. The government is also building a fire service academy in Kwali, Abuja, expected to be completed by December, to train more emergency-response personnel. Fire Safety Week activities will hold across the 36 states and the FCT, with awareness campaigns in schools, markets, motor parks and other public spaces.
