Former BAIC Chairman Xu Heyi Gets Suspended Death Sentence for Bribery

A Beijing court has sentenced former BAIC Group chairman Xu Heyi to death with a two-year reprieve after convicting him of bribery and money laundering. Xu was also given a separate two-year prison term and a 200,000-yuan fine for money laundering. The court combined the penalties into a suspended death sentence, revoked his political rights for life and ordered the confiscation of his personal assets. Chinese law allows a suspended death sentence to be commuted, often to life imprisonment, depending on a convict’s conduct during the two-year period. The case is part of China’s continuing anti-corruption campaign targeting senior executives at state-owned companies.
