Court of Appeal Voids PDP’s Ibadan Convention, Imposes N2M Fine
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld the Federal High Court’s decision nullifying the PDP National Convention held in Ibadan. A three-member panel unanimously dismissed all nine consolidated appeals and fined the appellants N2 million. Led by Justice Mohammed Ambi-Usi Danjuma, the court ruled that political parties must hold congresses and conventions in line with their own constitutions and the Electoral Act. Failure to do so removes such gatherings from the realm of internal matters and subjects them to judicial review. The judges stressed that any convention conducted in breach of party rules and the Electoral Act is invalid. Such violations, they noted, undermine both internal party democracy and the legal framework governing political parties.
