UNILAG Maritime Forum Hosts Inaugural National Arbitration Competition as Students Emerge Victorious
The Maritime Forum of the University of Lagos held its first National Maritime Arbitration Competition at the Faculty of Law annex. The event featured simulated arbitration proceedings and united students, legal practitioners and academics to highlight the growing role of Alternative Dispute Resolution in Nigeria’s legal sector. Professor Abiola Sanni, Dean of the Faculty of Law, praised the initiative and urged attendees to learn from the experts. Prof. Adewale Olawoyin (SAN) described ADR as the “new legal practice,” noting that high-value commercial disputes increasingly favour arbitration over litigation. Teams from UNILAG and other universities competed fiercely. The UNILAG duo of Toveshede Ebenezer and Adebayo Roqeeb emerged champions and claimed the N500,000 prize. Guest arbitrators commended the participants’ advocacy skills and advised them to focus on clarity, structure and simplicity in legal submissions.
