State Police: Key to True Federalism and Better Security, Says NIIA Professor
A Nigerian Institute of International Affairs professor has backed the creation of state police as essential for strengthening security and restoring true federalism. He highlighted that policing is traditionally a state function in federal systems and criticised Nigeria’s centralised structure for limiting governors’ ability to tackle local crime. He noted recent incidents in Oyo State where governors lacked effective control over security agencies despite being chief security officers. The professor argued that state police would bring operational flexibility, allow states to handle local crimes, and leave national security to federal forces. He acknowledged risks of political abuse but said legal safeguards and public oversight could address them over time.
