NRC Boss Says 60 Years of Rail Policy Failures Still Hold Nigeria Back
Nigerian Railway Corporation Managing Director Kayode Opeifa says decades of neglect, weak investment and policy errors have left Nigeria’s rail system struggling to meet the country’s transport and economic needs. He said rail modernisation began under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, but progress later suffered when the existing narrow-gauge network was neglected. According to him, the country is still dealing with the consequences of those decisions. Opeifa said the Federal Government is now focused on making existing rail assets more productive while expanding the network. He added that states and private investors can now partner with the Federal Government to develop rail services, citing projects and discussions in Lagos, Plateau, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna and parts of the South-East. He also said the government is reviewing its 25-year rail development plan, with the long-term goal of connecting major cities across all 36 states by rail.
