Utomi Says Rent-Seeking Has Kept Nigeria in a ‘Feeding-Bottle Economy’
Political economist Pat Utomi says Nigeria’s economy rewards political connections and access to public contracts more than genuine productivity and innovation. Speaking in Benin City, he argued that real wealth creation should produce jobs and improve living standards. Instead, he said, many elites enrich themselves through public funds while creating few opportunities for the wider population. Utomi added that Nigeria needs visionary leadership and institutions that reward merit, competition and new ideas. He urged journalists to help shift public debate away from tribal sentiments and towards policies that can drive development.
