Kano High Court Sentences Phone Robber to Death for 2020 Murder
A Kano State High Court has handed down a death sentence by hanging to Abdulaziz Umar for killing 22-year-old Mubarak Salisu Badawa during an armed robbery. Umar was convicted on two counts: armed robbery and culpable homicide. Justice Zuwaira Yusuf ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The attack took place on October 1, 2020, near the Race Course in Badawa, where the victim’s Samsung phone worth ₦100,000 was stolen. Umar and several accomplices used a knife and caused the victim’s death by stabbing. During trial, the prosecution called four witnesses. The defence called only Umar. Six accomplices remain at large under relevant sections of the Kano State Penal Code.
