Declassified CIA Files Show Bin Laden Considered Attacks on UK Before 9/11
Newly declassified CIA records show that US intelligence officials believed Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda were considering attacks on the United Kingdom years before the September 11, 2001 attacks. A 1998 assessment said bin Laden was exploring further attacks against the United States and the UK after US missile strikes on Al-Qaeda-linked targets in Sudan and Afghanistan. The memo did not identify specific targets or dates. Other files warned that Al-Qaeda wanted to strike the US, the UK, Israel and other allied countries. Some assessments also raised fears that the group could hijack aircraft or use an explosive-packed plane against a US city. The release contains 71 partly redacted intelligence briefings and highlights how incomplete and uncertain US intelligence was before the 9/11 attacks.
