Nigeria’s Czech Defence Mission: Can Technology Transfer Build Local Arms and Drone Capacity?

Nigeria’s defence delegation to the Czech Republic is exploring more than weapons purchases. The talks focus on establishing an ammunition-production line in Nigeria and gaining technology for drones and other military equipment. The key issue is whether any partnership will build lasting local capacity. Genuine technology transfer should include machinery, technical designs, training for engineers, maintenance knowledge, quality testing and the ability to adapt equipment to Nigeria’s security needs. Local ammunition and drone capability could reduce pressure on foreign exchange, limit exposure to delayed imports and strengthen operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, piracy and border threats. It could also support skilled jobs across engineering, software, metals, chemicals and logistics. The real measure of success will be functioning factories, certified products, trained Nigerian personnel and reliable supply chains. Nigeria must ensure these partnerships reduce dependence on imported components rather than create another long-term procurement channel.
