Auntie Nkem, as she is affectionately called, is a lady with a rare love for children, about 32 years working experience with children, as a presenter, producer, director and consultant to many international organisations.

Nkem worked for the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) from 1976 to 1991. She started her media career at NTA Enugu, where she developed programmes like Tortoise Club, Women’s World, Home Economics and Youth Forum.

Her excellence with these programmes drew the attention of her superiors who commissioned a team spearheaded by her to develop programmes for national viewership. 

This gave birth to Tales by Moonlight and Speak Out. Tales by Moonlight went ahead to become the most popular family programme on air.

After retirement, she set up her own media production outfit, Glorious Diamond Production, with their goal narrowed to producing media content for children, youths and the family.

Nkem has been a dogged fighter for the right of the Nigerian child. She was in the committee that reviewed the Nigerian Draft on the Rights of the Child in 1988. 

In 2000, she became the founding coordinator of the Nigerian Children’s Parliament. She has also worked with the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) as a media consultant, to formulate policies that will protect the Nigerian child. 

She served from 2000 to 2005 as an advisory board member of the Children Television Trust International, United Kingdom. Nkem has also been a consultant to Media, Communications and External Affairs Department at UNICEF.

The priceless aspect of Tales by Moonlight was that it gave Nigerian kids in the city the epic village setting read about in African novels where children travelled back to the village to enjoy rich indigenous stories from their grandparents. 

For many of us who didn't experience this age-old African practice between grandparents and grandchildren due to our elderly ones dying early or being too ill to entertain us, Tales by Moonlight was the only show that compensated us, even without trying. 

A look into Nkem Oselloka-Orakwue, fondly called Auntie Nkem, the producer and director of Tales by Moonlight 
Nkem Oselloka-Orakwue came into the Nigerian media scene after developing the country's best family programme on TV, titled Tales by Moonlight. Auntie Nkem, as she is affectionately called, is a presenter, producer, director, and consultant for several international agencies. She is widely known for her admirable love for children and has worked with them for about 32 years. 

From 1976 through 1991, Nkem worked with the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA). Among the programmes she created at NTA Enugu were The Tortoise Club, Women's World, Home Economics, Children's Parliament, and Youth Forum. She was so successful with these shows that her bosses asked her to lead a team responsible for creating shows for widespread distribution. Both Tales by Moonlight and Speak Out have their roots in this era. 

Auntie Nkem also founded the Children & Young People's Development Centre, an organisation dedicated to assisting youth in developing their intellectual, physical, and moral potential. The Nigerian Children's Parliament also hired her as its first coordinator in 2000, and she later worked as a media expert for the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) on child protection measures. 

Oselloka-Orakwue was an advisory board member of Children Television Trust International, UK, from 2000 to 2005. From 1990 to 2005, numerous international organisations sought her expertise in coordinating events such as the International Children's Festival in Turkey, France, and Bulgaria due to her skill set and wealth of experience.

Auntie Nkem possesses several academic and professional certificates from Nigeria and abroad. Producer of ill-fated movie breaks silence on cause of Junior Pope’s death
Junior Pope and four other actors were killed when their boat capsized in River Niger in Anambra State while on their way back from a location where they had gone to shoot a movie.

>  Movie producer, Adanma Luke, has broken her silence on the boat accident that occurred during her new movie shoot in Delta State, claiming the lives of popular Nollywood actor, John Paul Odonwodo, and four others

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that Mr Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, and four other actors drowned after their boat capsized in Anam River in Anambra State on Wednesday while returning from the location of the movie shoot.

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) had earlier said 12 individuals were on the ill-fated boat.

NIWA added that of the 12, seven were successfully rescued, two found dead, including Mr Odonwodo while three others – two females and one male – were declared missing.

The police in Anambra State, Friday, said they had recovered bodies of the three missing Nollywood stars.

Real reason

Mrs Luke, in her first public comment on the incident in a video clip she posted online on Saturday, blamed the death of Junior Pope, on his refusal to use a life jacket during the boat travel.

“On that shooting day, I saw my director. I saw Emeka. They were outside. My director was wearing a life jacket. Emeka, the D.O.P. was on a life jacket. There was still one other jacket which I don’t know who took it,” she said in a video clip uploaded on her Instagram handle on Saturday.

Continuing, the filmmaker said, “My production manager said they saw one life jacket hanging there. So, they took it. He even told the late Friday to send one (live jacket) to Junior Pope but Junior Pope said it was dirty and so, he didn’t take it. These people with life jackets survived (the boat accident).

“And they also told me that when they were in the water trying to survive, the Junior Pope was there asking if everybody was Okay. And that they even threw a gallon to him to use and hold himself which he was holding. But all of a sudden,they didn’t see him again.” 

She did not, however, confirm if four other crew members who died in the boat accident were not putting on life jackets during the incident.

AGN’s moves
The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) had declared Thursday as ‘No Shoot Day’ for all Nollywood filmmakers, and suspended movie production involving riverine areas indefinitely, following the death of actor Junior Pope and others.

Making the declaration in a statment on Thursday, Emeka Rollas, National President of AGN, also announced the suspension of the production of the movie which led to the accident, ‘The other side of Life’, produced by Adamma Luke.

“Following the tragic incident of a boat mishap that claimed the life of Junior Pope and three other crew members at waterside of River Niger Cable point Asaba on 10th of April, all films that involve riverine areas and boat riding is hereby suspended indefinitely.

“No Shoot on all locations nationwide on Thursday, 11th April 2024 and the film titled ‘The other side of Life’ is suspended indefinitely,” the statement said.

It also barred actors from dealing with the movie producer for the time being.

“Also, no actor is allowed to work with Adamma Luke as a producer till further notice, while we keep searching for the bodies of the remaining persons,” he said.

The police in Anambra State, South-east Nigeria, have also begun an investigation to unravel any criminal liability in the cause of death of John Pope and others.
