AKSU First-class Graduate Wins The Dr. Blessed Udo-ekpo Foundation's Award

PEOPLE were excited when they saw a humpback whale being transported on the streets of Cape Town on Sunday, 17 November.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Hout Bay station commander Spencer Oldham, the huge whale carcass had washed ashore at Slangkop Lighthouse in Kommetjie.

It was loaded onto a truck by officials on Sunday morning and removed from the beach. Several residents were shocked by the whale's size as it was transported by truck.

"On Saturday, 16 November, at 9.11am, NSRI Hout Bay duty crew were activated to assist the City of Cape Town (CoCT) Marine Animal Stranding Network and the Department of Environment with a humpback whale carcass that was adrift offshore of Slangkop Lighthouse, Kommetjie.

“The NSRI rescue craft Albie Matthews and Nadine Gordimer were launched, and the whale carcass was towed by NSRI Hout Bay to the Hout Bay Harbour slipway where the carcass was removed on Sunday by the CoCT Solid Waste Management, assisted by CoCT Law Enforcement, the SA Police Services, and the Cape Town Traffic Department. A large pod of dolphins accompanied NSRI during the towing operation," said Oldham.

Social media users who had a glimpse of the huge creature were amazed, as it was the first time many of them had seen such a sight.

The carcass was 14,8 metres in length and weighed about 35 000kg.

"This creature is huge; I used to see it in pictures, but today I have finally seen its size. It is very big," said Lorraine Gumbo on social media after seeing it in Constantia.

Siyabonga Bukani from Philippi said that he saw the truck carrying the whale while he was on his way to church.

"It’s very big; it filled up a long trailer of a truck. When I saw it in videos, I thought it was something small, but it was probably the size of three elephants. I couldn't believe that these creatures are that big," he said.

Two other humpback whales were also found washed dead on 15 October and 8 November 2024.

This visit marked a key step in the organization's ongoing project to support schools across three local government areas of the state. 

The program, which commenced at 12 PM in the school premises, was centered on an arts-aided mental health sensitization campaign aimed at fostering mental wellness among young students. 

The event featured Mrs. Oluwasola Rauf, a renowned social advocate, who delivered a powerful address on dispelling myths and misconceptions about mental health. Her session inspired thought-provoking questions from the students, reflecting their curiosity and eagerness to learn more about mental wellness. Mrs. Rauf emphasized the importance of open communication in tackling fears, anxieties, and worries, stating that mental illnesses thrive in isolation. 

Mrs. Rauf's interaction created a safe space for the students, allowing them to share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. She stressed the need for psychological support in schools, highlighting how addressing emotional and mental health challenges can significantly enhance students' overall well-being and academic performance.

The blue walls of Atlantic Hall, the lush trees that frame the campus, and the sprawling play lawn were all sources of inspiration for Oso during his formative years. MDCAN COOUTH hails Tinubu for intervening in UNIZIK VCship crisis

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has hailed President Bola Tinubu for intervening in the crisis in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

President Tinubu had on Wednesday ordered the Minister of Education to dissolve the governing council of the institution and also remove its recently installed Vice Chancellor, Prof Benard Odoh and the registrar.

This is coming three days into a warning strike declared by the national body of the association to protest the exclusion of their members from contesting the position of Vice Chancellor.

The chairman of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital branch of the association, Dr Amaechi Nwachukwu PhD who spoke to journalists praised Tinubu for harkening to the cry of the association.

He said the action taken by Tinubu shows that he is a listening leader, and also ready to do the right thing.

He said: "I'm happy that President Bola Tinubu has taken a decisive action over the crisis in UNIZIK.

"You remember that just three days ago, MDCAN commenced a warning strike. We the COOUTH chapter of the association also held a press conference where we supported our national body and quickly called for the sack of the VC, dissolution of the council, and readvertise the position of VC of UNIZIK to including medical professionals.

"We are happy that the president has shown that he wants things to be done right. We are also calling on him to look into other requests we tabled before him.

"We are asking too that any where doctors are working, be it in universities or parastatals, they should be paid with the consolidated salary structure.

"We also told him that the current review of our salary structure by the federal government, which added 35 percent of our basic to the salary, some are not paying it, while some have not paid the arrears. We are asking for him to look into all these," Nwachukwu appealed.

The presidential commissioning ceremony, which is coming at a time when several segments of the establishment circles of the Federal government and the organized private sector, including collective sub-populations of the Nigerian state are groaning under the yoke of heavy and unbearable payment of direct - grid electricity bills through the customer-oriented service provision by a combination of professional services by the GENCOS and DISCOS.

Seen by almost the majority of renewable energy experts and stakeholding partners as a welcome and timely presidential governance move, the commissioning ceremony is presenting itself as not just a source of excitement for members of the University of Abuja local Community but the euphoria associated with it, extends to other old generation federal universities.

The Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile - Ife, in Osun State, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, in an exclusive interview with this reporter, offered an insight into what the experiences and lasting impressions at his University had been like before the Rural Electrification Agency offered a quick Interventionist approach in bailing it out from the choking financial burden of routine expenditure on the direct -grid electricity bills payment.

Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire said thus, "the Rural Electrification Agency has been very strategic in the provision of clean, reliable, stable and sustainable renewable energy solutions in at least, 37 federal Universities and about 7 or 8 federal University Teaching Hospitals, making these universities, heave a sigh of relief ".

According to the Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile -Ife, the present administration, should do more in terms of specific needs that these universities require to move teaching and learning forward.

The Energizing Education Programme, which is a World Bank assisted project, essentially programmed and administratively supervised by the Rural Electrification Agency {REA} is closing up before the end of the year, 2024.

For the Vice Chancellor of a new generation university, the Federal University Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, "we are happy about how the Rural Electrification Agency and its component units are progressively moving to energize all the Federal universities and university teaching hospitals. Said Professor Olayemi Akinwumi: “I must commend His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for prioritizing the energy basic-needs and felt-needs of the federal universities and their teaching hospitals.”

Joshua Musa.

This highly impactful milestone project, being implemented under the second phase of the Energizing Education Programme, (EEP 11) is part of the Federal Government's Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP) managed and midwifed by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) led by Abubakar Abba Aliyu as Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer.

Essentially, the multi billion naira capital projects, by way of renewable energy projections, is targeted at delivering sustainable and uninterrupted electricity supply to seven (7) Federal Universities and two (2) University Teaching Hospitals, across the six geographical zones of Nigeria.

Speaking while paying a courtesy visit to the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi, Nigeria's Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, told the Vice Chancellor that the Solar Hybrid Power Plant, represents President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's commitment towards delivering sustainable energy solutions that can empower institutions like the University of Abuja.

The Hon. The Minister of Power explained that the 3-MegaWatts capacity Solar Hybrid Power Plant to be commissioned soon, is a model of what the Federal Government hopes to achieve in enhancing the energy sector across Nigeria in the remaining years of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led APC administration.

For Nigeria's Hon Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the University of Abuja capital project, falls in line with the renewable energy components of the Renewed Hope Agenda energy policy directives initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, geared towards sustainable development.

The pre-commissioning ceremony site inspection visit provided the Hon Minister of Power the opportunity to have a firsthand exchange of ideas with the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, 42 year old Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi.

Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi overtly excited about the evident prospects of the University of Abuja being a beneficiary of such a Federal Government- backed renewable energy based investment, described the 3-MegaWatts capacity Solar Hybrid Power Plant as a transformative high-end achievement for the University of Abuja.

Said an excited Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi who has made history as the second female Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, after Professor (Mrs.) Gambo Laraba Abdullahi, "uninterrupted electrical power supply is a game- changer for our University. “This project aligns with our mission to deliver quality education and foster innovations and reliable power is the foundation for transformative education and this project will enhance our teaching, learning and research capabilities."

The Power Minister further noted that the functionality of the 3- Mega Watts capacity Solar Hybrid Power Plant at the Federal University, representing the Federal Capital Territory - Abuja, would go a long way in encouraging intellectual over-achievement processes in teaching, learning and research efforts by students, scholars and teachers.

The project host who also doubles as the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) Abubakar Abba Aliyu in his remarks during the visit, underscored the transformative impact of the project on the University of Abuja community and the broader educational sector in Nigeria.

Said Abubakar Abba Aliyu, "this project exemplifies Rural Electrification Agency's commitment towards providing innovative energy solutions that empower our educational institutions. The University of Abuja is now better positioned to fulfill its mission of delivering quality education while fostering research and development through reliable and sustainable power."

The scandal at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, now infamously known as the ODOHGATE, has left an indelible mark on Nigeria's academic community.

At its core, the controversy revolves around Dr. Bernard Odoh's claim of being a professor at the Federal University Gusau, which has been unequivocally debunked by the university itself.

The lessons from this saga are multifaceted. Firstly, it highlights the dangers of academic dishonesty and the importance of rigorous background checks. 

Dr. Odoh's fake professorship and his attempts to legitimize it through forged documents demonstrate Nigeria's worship and preference for paper qualifications above competence.

Secondly, the ODOHGATE scandal exposes the flaws in Nigeria's academic system, where personal connections and clout often trump merit. 

The fact that Dr. Odoh was able to deceive many, including some clergy members who prayed for him during his inauguration, is a testament to the pervasive influence of nepotism and cronyism.

“Mermaids are real- I saw it on Animal Planet!”

No, you didn’t. That ‘documentary’ was in fact a new generation of fictional media called a ‘mockumentary’, or as Animal Planet puts it, ‘docudrama.’ It’s like “This is Spinal Tap” for marine biology. And they admit that However, people took the show so seriously that in order to deal with massive amounts of inquiries, NOAA had to issue an official statement that, to their knowledge, mermaids aren’t real.

A critical look at the Animal Planet ‘docudrama’ reveals abominable (excuse the pun) CGI, combined with scripted interviews with actors. And who can blame them? People love mermaids, they delivered, and they made a ton of money. In fact, it worked so well that they produced another fictional (FICTIONAL!) docudrama, “Megalodon” for Shark Week.
Most scientists wouldn’t touch the subject of mermaids with a ten foot pole- I am going full contact.

Why couldn’t mermaids exist? Here are 5 reasons.

1: They would freeze to death Quickly, and matter what ocean. Especially those skinny Ariel/Disney types. The truth is, the human-like body form is not made for surviving long periods in the water. Check this out:

Sure, there are areas of the ocean that are above 70 degrees- on the SURFACE. Assuming mermaids would want to live out in the bottom of the open ocean, it is just too cold for them. And, once you get down a few meters, water temperature drops dramatically. 
So what would a cold-hardy mermaid look like? 1: really hairy, or 2: really fat. Or: 3: both.
The first option would to look like a marine mammals, whose thick blubber layers protect them from cold, dark waters. What of smaller animals? The second option for thermoregulation is a thick coat of hair- such as that of Enhydra lutra¸ or the sea otter. The sea otter has more than 900,000 hairs per square inch (Kuhn et al. 2010). The problem? Otters have to groom themselves often to keep their hair filled with air, and not with water (Fish et al. 2002). Very inconvenient if you are an elusive denizen of the deep.

And those long slender arms? They would freeze off. Marine mammals have fusiform bodies (reducing surface area-to- volume ratio) and short appendages that can withstand reduced bloodflow and heat.

So, essentially, you would end up with a very hairy or obese mermaid with stubby arms.

2: You can’t pick and choose…body parts 

Picture your typical mermaid- a graceful female with the scaled tail of a fish. Mammals are defined by being warm-blooded and having hair; fish do not. An animal cannot have both human and fish-defining characteristics- it’s just all wrong, evolutionarily speaking. The human line of evolution is fairly well-mapped. Prior to the development of hominids, humans and fish are so far branching down the evolutionary tree that the first marsupial mammals appeared during the Jurassic period 173 million years ago (Kumar and Hedges 1998).

Additionally, the idea that somehow a human bred with a fish and produced viable, virile offspring is just ridiculous. Which brings us to the next point… 

3: They would go extinct

How do mermaids reproduce? They are human down to the waist, after all. Well, there are two options for that. First, they could do it human-style. Which means that they’d have to get it on the mammalian way- with internal fertilization. But what if you have fish parts down there? Most fish reproduce externally- with females depositing eggs in the environment and males fertilizing them.
Could mermaids lay eggs? Think again! The only mammals that produce eggs are the echidna and platypus- the monotremes of the class Mammalia. And these guys don’t have any teeth, look nothing like a human, and really would make a poor excuse for a mermaid.

Oh, and don’t even get me started on sex ratio. As far as I can tell, there are waaaay more mermaids than mermen.

4: They would be constipated.

While we’re talking about plumbing, the fish and mammal digestive processes are so very different, they cannot jive. Mammals digest food via complex digestive tracts, which produce solid waste and urine- a sterile byproduct composed mostly of water and waste, salts, and proteins. Fish kidneys produce ammonia- which is expelled via their gills. Yep, they essentially pee through their gills. 

As for digesting food, where humans have well-developed large and small intestines, fish have one simple intestine.

So really, you can’t have an animal with a mammalian digestive tract and a fish-designed hind end. Even more tellingly- can you point out the butt on a mermaid? Didn’t think so.

5: We have no physical evidence. 
Really. If the existence of such a creature were true, it would literally change the face of science- and why would it be covered up if it were a real animal? That makes for a good plotline, but doesn’t make any logical sense- what global conspiracy would cover these things up? If mermaids existed, the scientific world would be studying them endlessly, and grant money would fall like rain during monsoon season. The world would know.

So there you have it- mermaids would be very cold, sterile, constipated, and probably extinct, which seems pretty miserable to me. So the next time you see something you think looks too good to be real, think again – because it probably is.
